I’ve been having many conversations with readers about money, which is not unusual, but what is standing out a little more is that I’ve noticed that for those who keep their money apart from their spouse, once you start to pile on all the other stressors of life, cracks begin to appear. I suspect that across Aotearoa, there are relationships being tested at the moment. This blog encourages you to face it head-on; start a conversation.
I have the privilege to speak to so many people about “money stuff” and a very common scenario is that of a couple who have been together for a long time yet they still keep their money completely separate from each other. If you are committed to him or her being “the one”, you trust each other and have combined everything else in your life (your wardrobe, the bathroom cabinet, your home, your children, your pets), then why not your money?
Having a common goal helps. We equally don’t want to be broke now or broke in retirement. We want to work less now, enjoy family life now, be prepared when things go wrong and not be so reliant on other people to create an income. These goals keep us on the straight and narrow and they are something that we openly discuss.
